COST / COVERAGE BRIEF

Coverage follows the use and the form

The ingredient alone does not settle the answer. Plans look at the brand, the reason for care, the device, and their own rules.

MEDICARE DRUG BENEFIT

The base rule

As of September 2026, the Medicare drug benefit still excluded medicines when they were used only for weight loss.

As of September 2026, Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes or Zepbound for sleep apnea could be eligible for ordinary Medicare drug coverage, but each plan could still apply its own list and review rules.

TEMPORARY BRIDGE

A separate route

As of September 2026, a temporary Medicare program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge offered certain weight medicines for $50 a month through December 31, 2027.

It is for people with a Medicare drug plan who qualify. Ask your drug plan whether you do.

For tirzepatide used only for weight, that program included the Zepbound KwikPen, a pen that holds several doses, but not Zepbound vials (small bottles) or single-dose pens.

Ask the clinic which of the three it plans to prescribe.

CALL SCRIPT

Ask the plan these exact questions

  • Is this exact brand covered for my reason for care?
  • Does it matter whether it is a pen or a vial?
  • What review is needed before the first fill?
  • What amount applies before and after the deductible?
  • What is the appeal path after a denial?

BEFORE THE CALL ENDS

Write down five answers

  1. Product: which brand you would get
  2. Use: your reason for care
  3. Form: pen or vial
  4. Review rule: any approval step before the first fill
  5. Your amount: what you would pay

Keep the plan’s answer beside the clinic quote. A low care fee does not settle the medicine cost.
